The free edge is the part of the nail that extends beyond the fingertips and is typically the fastest-growing section. While the lunula, which is the visible part of the nail matrix, plays a role in nail growth, it is not responsible for the growth rate itself.

The cuticle functions as a protective barrier at the base of the nail and does not grow or contribute significantly to the overall length of the nail. The nail bed, on the other hand, supports the nail plate but is not where the growth occurs. Therefore, while all parts of the nail have their functions, the free edge is specifically recognized for growing at the fastest rate, resulting in the appearance of longer nails over time.
